The Living Waterways Project (a partnership between Northumberland and Durham Wildlife Trusts and the Environment Agency to reduce flood risk and improve urban streams for people and wildlife) and the Newcastle Youth Offending Team have been working on a joint project funded by the Northumbria Regional Flood and Coastal Committee to improve a stream in Forest Hall, North Tyneside.
Stream clear ups, river bank planting and distributing newsletters to local residents have all helped to improve the watercourse.
The main part of the project has been to create a viewing platform for residents of Chipchase House in Forest Hall which is part of the Percy Hedley Foundation. The platform will be used by residents who previously did not have anywhere to sit and enjoy the grounds including the stream area. Young people helping on the project have also been able to learn new skills.
