About NWT

Welcome to Northumberland Wildlife Trust's Website.  Here you will find information about us, our work and how we fit into the Wildlife Trusts network.

Charity number 221819

We are the leading charity dedicated to wildlife conservation and environmental education in North East England. Our mission is to conserve local wildlife, promote nature conservation and provide the means by which everyone can become involved.

Our Business Plan has three aims:

  • To conserve the wildlife and natural heritage of Northumberland, Newcastle upon Tyne and North Tyneside
  • To raise awareness, increase understanding and invoke positive action for wildlife conservation and sustainable living for a broad audience, representative of the social mix of the region
  • To practise, promote and demonstrate organisational quality and environmental sustainability in all we do

Established as a registered charity in 1971, the Trust has strong local influence and authority as the only organisation uniquely concerned with wildlife in Northumberland, Newcastle and North Tyneside. We work regionally with our sister Trusts in Durham and Tees Valley, and we have national influence as a member of the Wildlife Trusts’ partnership, a nation-wide network dedicated to the achievement of a UK richer in wildlife. (www.wildlifetrusts.org).

As a partnership we have over half a million members and care for over 2,000 nature reserves. As an individual Trust, we have over 12,000 members and care for over 60 nature reserves across the county, both rural and urban. The Trust employs around 30 skilled staff, most of whom are based at our offices in St Nicholas Park, Newcastle, and many hundreds of volunteers get involved in all aspects of our work.
