What we've been up to

The Young People’s Forum was set up in January 2023 and have achieved lots in that time:

  • Organised ‘Switch and Stitch: Eco Fashion Festival’ - an anti-fast fashion festival to swap clothes 👗, learn to mend and upcycle 🧵, listen to live music and more!

  • Visited three of our flagship nature reserves: Hauxley, West Chevington and East Chevington to see our wildling efforts in action.

  • Advised our Red Squirrel Northern England project on how to increase their engagement with young audiences.

  • Supported our marketing team to develop a new young people focused membership – Adopt an Animal

  • Supported funding applications for youth-led projects at the Trust, like Eco Influencers

  • Learnt new skills like writing funding applications, event planning, health and safety, writing professional emails, how to plan a social media campaign and more!

Meet our Young People

Ava

Hi, my name is Ava! I’m currently in sixth form but hoping to study history and sociology at university. My interest in the environment comes from being surrounded by it since I was little, and I love to share the beautiful local spaces in Northumberland. The youth forum has been a great opportunity to meet like-minded people and create meaningful action.

Lily

Hi! I’m Lily, a second-year literature student and founder of the climate hope organization Wild Stories. I joined the Young People’s Forum to make sure youth voices are being heard when it comes to our local wild spaces and to hopefully develop a more creative side to helping the environment within Northumberland Wildlife Trust’s various projects. I’ve enjoyed meeting likeminded people and learning all the details of how to make a project come to life, from venue hire to social media!

Lucy

Hi, I’m Lucy. I am passionate about environmentalism and fighting the climate crisis, as well as how reconnecting with nature can help with mental health. I found out about the young people’s forum when I attended the 2022 Climate Action Newcastle rally to demand more action facing the climate crisis. After picking up a flyer, I decided to join so I could meet others who are passionate about this cause, and it’s been such a great experience. I’ve loved getting the opportunity to organise an event around sustainability and getting insight into careers within the wildlife trust. It’s been so inspiring speaking to everyone in the forum and learning from them!
