Sea Scouts to the rescue at Northumberlandia

Young people from the Gosforth Central Sea Scouts have rallied to the cause and supported Northumberland Wildlife Trust’s call out for tree planting volunteers at Northumberlandia

The group of 18 enthusiastic 10-year-old Sea Scouts and their scout leaders, planted over 300 trees as part of the Trees for Cities project, which works to plant trees in urban areas to create greener cities.

Since 1993, over 1,000,000 urban trees have been planted in a wide variety of public places including streets, schools, hospitals and housing estates and now on the site at Blagdon Lane in Cramlington.

A number of the trees planted have replaced many of the existing ones that had been blown down or damaged by storms from last November onwards. They will also help combat climate change and increase biodiversity.

Speaking about their efforts, Alexandra Reynolds Northumberland Wildlife Trust Community Engagement Officer says: “The enthusiasm of the young people as they planted the trees was wonderful. They were suitably proud of themselves as was I.

“Their team work was great, as was their impressive tree knowledge, so, needless to say, they were justly rewarded with a trip up to the top of the Lady of the North herself.”
