A Wonderful Surprise

Isn’t wildlife wonderfully surprising?

I love its synergy and how wildlife comes out of nowhere sometimes and makes us notice it. I delivered a talk on Tuesday evening to local businesses and tradesmen about North East wildlife, and afterwards, stopped on my way home in the late evening to get some wild time. It had been a long day. I’d talked a lot about wildlife and conservation but not directly experienced very much. I had to get out in it. Immediately, in the field next to where I parked, I spotted a doe roe deer, amongst a crop of brassicas. As I continued along a footpath, I caught glimpses of a little owl then a barn owl quartering the hedge-line and saw three hares running in sinuous 8s around the freshly cut meadow. It felt suddenly as if everything I’d reflected on, and spoken about all day, had suddenly come to life in front of me; nature manifesting itself all around me! It was as if the wildlife and habitats I’d shown on powerpoint earlier had leapt off the screen and become real in these few minutes, a sort of real-time living Springwatch show. I can’t wait for the next episode!
