At a time when many people are reflecting on global events and the pace of change, the national awareness week encourages individuals to think about how they wish to be remembered and the positive impact they can leave behind for future generations.

The campaign celebrates the many ways people shape their legacy, from treasured memories with family and friends to lifelong passions, community involvement, support for charitable causes and lasting contributions that continue long after they are gone.

An increasing number of people across the UK are choosing to leave a gift to charity in their Will alongside provisions for loved ones. More than one in five charity supporters aged 40 and over now include a charitable gift in their Will, helping to generate vital funding for good causes. In 2025 alone, gifts in Wills raised £4.4 billion for charities across the country.

For Northumberland Wildlife Trust, legacy gifts have played a significant role in protecting some of the region's most important wildlife habitats.

Previous legacies have helped fund the purchase of a stretch of coastline at Druridge Bay, which was developed into a new nature reserve. A substantial legacy also enabled the Trust to acquire the 600-acre Benshaw Moor in Redesdale, safeguarding its valuable peatland, limestone springs and wildlife-rich habitats from intensive commercial forestry and wind turbine development.
