What is Nextdoor Nature?

Imagine stepping out of your front door to birds singing and bees buzzing; walking along streets with flowers, colour and shade; or sharing locally-grown food with your neighbours in a community garden. We know that having nature on our doorsteps is not only good for our physical and mental health, but also helps us connect better with each other. Nature has ‘gone missing’ in many of our areas and we need it back!

Nextdoor Nature is bringing communities together to help nature flourish where they live and work! Thanks to £5 million funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, Nextdoor Nature will provide people with the advice and support they need to help nature on their doorstep and leave a lasting natural legacy to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

Want to get involved?

Northumberland Wildlife Trust is co-ordinating Nextdoor Nature here in Newcastle to support communities in Benwell, Scotswood, Elswick, Wingrove, Arthur’s Hill, Byker, and Walker who want to create space for nature on their doorstep. We can help to give you the skills, knowledge, tools and some funding to put some life back into your neighbourhood.

Your community group might be a residents’ association, a scouts/guides pack, a faith group, a community hall, a small business group, a trade association. It doesn’t matter, so long as you all get together to help nature, climate change and create a change for the better together.

If you want to help nature thrive in your neighbourhood, tell us about your idea and let us know how we can help!

You can send a short video of your idea via WhatsApp or WeTransfer (natasha.hemsley@northwt.org.uk) or have a chat with Tash on 07393 571 998.

  • Are you already part of a community group or would you like to create your own?
  • Have you already started making space for nature in your local area?
  • Do you need help with how to apply for funding, with how to work with your local council, or with how to get your group started?

It doesn’t matter what stage you are at, or if you have an idea and don’t know where to start, please get in touch!

Here's a little snapshot of what Nextdoor Nature is supporting near you.
