For one day only, visitors will be able to park on the site between 10:00am and 3:00pm and explore the site at their leisure.

The 327-hectare site near Druridge Bay sits atop a former opencast coalmine and, like other Northumberland Wildlife Trust’s existing reserves in the area, it is a great example of how nature can recover in this manufactured landscape and one of the most ambitious lowland rewilding projects in the north of England, forming an integral part of the wildlife charity’s fight against global warming. 

Members of staff from the nearby Hauxley Wildlife Discovery Centre will be available around the site to talk about the work the wildlife charity has conducted so far and its future plans.

Anybody wanting a more in-depth insight into the different habitat there and the work the recent Biodiversity Boost Project carried out to habitats and increase the number of species on the site can take part in the West Chevington Wander that starts at 10:30am.

The walking route is three miles covering some rough, uneven ground which may be wet. Places need to be booked at www.nwt.org.uk/events

“Whether you just want to wander round the site or have a more in-depth tour, the event next Monday is something worth adding to the list of things to do this summer, especially as cars can’t usually be parked on the site, but on this occasion, we have made an exception and  will be opening the gates.”
