Soaking up the last rays of summer

It wasn’t just humans who were soaking up the last rays of summer last weekend.

Hundreds of common darter dragonflies were spotted basking around the outdoor café area of the Visitor Centre at Northumberlandia, much to the delight of wildlife enthusiasts Julia Saunders and her dad Mick Saunders.

Julia, who lives in Worcestershire was ‘up home’ for two weeks visiting her dad who is a member of Northumberland Wildlife Trust.  Whilst back in the region they took the opportunity to visit the Trust’s reserves at Hauxley and Big Waters, in addition to Northumberlandia on Blagdon Lane.

Julia said: “What a welcome home. We were treated to the most amazing show of common darters at Northumberlandia. I’ve spent a lot of time chasing dragonflies and damselflies trying to get a photo of them in the past, but there was no need on this day - they came to us!

"Northumberlandia is always a lovely place to visit, but this time was extra special and we will both remember it with great delight.”

They say the people of the northeast are the friendliest and now, it seems, so are its insects.
