Take a walk on the wild side

Take a walk on the wild side

For the second year running, Northumberland Wildlife Trust is urging everybody to walk for wildlife this October and show they care about nature and the climate crisis.

From Monday 25 - Sunday 31 October, all 46 wildlife trusts are uniting for The Wildlife Trusts’ Big Wild Walk Week,  and asking nature-lovers to help raise vital money for their 30 by 30 mission that aims to restore at least 30% of land and sea for nature by 2030.

In this region, Northumberland Wildlife Trust is encouraging people to take on one of three challenges: walk 30km over the Big Wild Walk Week, walk 30km in three days or 30km in one day.

Alternatively, people can create their own challenge - invite the family, go it alone, set up a remote relay, or take part in the challenge on their own.  Indoors or outdoors, front room, park or wood, treadmill, running track or round the supermarket, the choice is endless and all for a good cause. Get your mobile or fitbit to track your distance!

Nationally, the Wildlife Trusts have more nature reserves than there are branches of McDonalds and most people live under three miles from their closest one.

Northumberland Wildlife Trust has over 60 reserves in Northumberland, Newcastle and North Tyneside just waiting for wild walkers to visit them.

Speaking about the Big Wild Walk, Nigel Porter Northumberland Wildlife Trust Chair says: “Let’s show our support for green spaces as we all strive to protect wildlife and combat climate change.

“Last year, millions of people walked around their local parks, country roads and woodlands to help cope with what was happening in the world around them, so, isn’t it time we all gave something back?”

“Why don’t you challenge yourself to raise some much-needed funds for The Wildlife Trusts? And, if it’s wet, cold or dark outside, walk round your living room instead to your favorite music.”
