Walks will be available at two of the wildlife charity’s urban reserves: Weetslade Country Park on the outskirts of Newcastle and Northumberlandia in Cramlington.

Both events are free and have been made possible thanks to the Land Trust.

On Friday 8th May, between 11:00am and 12:00 noon, staff from the Trust will be available to take members of the public on a relaxed and informal walk around Weetslade Country Park.

Participants will be able to find out fascinating facts about how the colliery site came into being as well as hearing about the Trust’s work to conserve the site that attracts over 75,000 visitors each year and has a range of habitats including wildflower meadows, grassland, scrub, reed bed and woodland areas.

At this time of year, the site is alive with the song of dozens of skylarks who have their own breeding enclosure, and, in the summer, visitors can delight in the aerial shows of swallows, swifts and martins.

Six days later, on Thursday 14th May, there’s the opportunity to join Trust staff again, this time at Northumberland for a relaxed and informative walk around the Lady of the North.

Between 1:00pm and 2:00pm, walkers will be able to learn about how the one hundred feet high and a quarter of a mile long sculpture was created, the work Northumberland Wildlife Trust is undertaking there, what wildlife we can be spotted on the site and what individuals can do to protect it.

Frances Smiles, Northumberland Wildlife Trust Community Events Co-ordinator says:

“Weetslade Country Park and Northumberlandia are two wonderful sites to walk around at any time of day, at any time of year, but to have an expert take you round the site pointing out what lives where and when is even better. The event is free thanks to the Land Trust, which is event letter, so come along and join us.”
