Try your hand at clothing upcycling this autumn.
With an item of clothing in the UK only worn on 7 - 10 times and, each year, around £140 million worth of used, but still wearable, clothing going to landfill sites - the result of what is commonly referred to as ‘fast fashion, the wildlife is set to host three visible mending sessions at Its Hauxley nature reserve this autumn.
The scheduled events follow the success of an upcycling workshop held last year as part of the wildlife charity’s Switch and Stitch: Eco Fashion festival at Northumbria University.
Now, on Wednesday 24th September between 10:00 am and 1:00 pm and Wednesday 1st and 8th October, again between 10:00 am and 1:00 pm, Jane Creighton, textiles and crafting expert, will be available at the Hauxley Wildlife Discovery Centre to guide members of the public through the process of making distinctive 'visible' repairs to give their clothing an extra lease of life.
Suitable for beginners and experts alike, all that is required is they take along an item of clothing which needs an update to find out how to work with holes, hems, rips, tears, or anything else that may present itself. Not only will the updating add something new to participants’ wardrobes it will also prevent one more item going into a landfill site.
