The Jean Cartman Wilder Communities Award commemorates the life and ethos of Jean Cartman, a member of the wildlife charity for over 40 years, a knowledgeable birdwatcher, enthusiastic wildlife gardener, generous donor to environmental charities and a passionate advocate for the natural world.
Any community or community group in Northumberland, Newcastle and North Tyneside has until Friday 16th January 2026 to apply, with the winners being announced on Tuesday 3rd February 2026.
With a top prize to the value of £500 and two runner up prizes to the value of £250 on offer, the awards are a wonderful opportunity for communities across the region to continue their wonderful work.
A spokesperson from Briardale House said:
“Having our work recognised by the Jean Cartman Wilder Award was a real highlight for us in 2025. It gave us the opportunity to demonstrate our commitment to the development of our outdoor space and the importance of safe outdoor spaces for well-being.
“With the award money, we were able to purchase equipment specifically designed to support people with physical needs, thus increasing our accessibility for all who would like to participate in our community garden.
“We have connected with several other organisations since winning the award, and we plan to collaborate locally to ensure local people benefit from our community allotment and beautiful outside spaces.”
