On Monday 16 February, between 6:00pm and 8:00pm the wildlife charity will be hosting a free immersive, creative evening for young people, to explore the hidden depths of the North Sea coastline at the Dove Marine Laboratory in Cullercoats.
The event is part of the wildlife charity’s Championing Nature Project and has been made possible by The Championships, Wimbledon and Emirates. More information about Championing Nature can be found at www.nwt.org.uk/what-we-do/projects/championing-nature
Across three short workshops, the young people will find out how kelp helps support marine life, protects the coastline from erosion and benefits everybody, whilst exploring how humans are impacting this vital habitat.
Participants will learn how microalgae are shaping sustainable solutions and explore the impacts of plastic pollution alongside practical actions everybody can take locally.
The evening will end with a Beach Glow Finale, where the young people will create UV-lit climate messaging using the plastics impacting the region’s shoreline. The glowing messages will be photographed and shared on social media to raise awareness of coastal challenges.
Rhiannon Studholme, Northumberland Wildlife Trust Eco Mentor says:
“This is a fantastic opportunity for like-minded young people to build their coastal conservation knowledge, get hands-on and creative whilst at the sae time connecting with environmental researchers and organisations. And, better still, it’s all free.”
This promises to be an extremely popular event, so places need to be booked quickly to avoid disappointment at www.nwt.org.uk/events
