Held at the Dove Marine Laboratory in Cullercoats, and supported by The Championships, Wimbledon and Emirates, the free session offered a mix of science, activism, and creativity.
In addition to guided tour of the historic laboratory there were workshops on algae, plastic pollution, and everyday actions to protect the oceans and a Q&A session focused on tackling aquatic waste.
The evening ended with a beach‑based creative session using washed‑up plastic for the North Sea coastline to spell out SOS (Save Our Seas), illuminated with UV lights before being fully dismantled and recycled.
Rhiannon Studholme, Northumberland Wildlife Trust Eco Mentor says:
“This event really gave the young people something to think about this half term and beyond, with one member of the group saying it had gone as far as to give them another strong push in choosing a future university course.
“Thanks to support from The Championships, Wimbledon and Emirates we were able to run the session free of charge which was very welcome news to the young people.
“Keep an eye on the Trust’s events page on the website www.nwt.org.uk/events for details of other events running as part of the Championing Nature project.”
